New Orleans Police Department is sponsoring the second 2012 Citizen’s Academy starting WednesdayJuly 18th. The classes lend helpful insight into the NOPD and its continuing efforts to reduce crimein New Orleans. The classes are taught by notable New Orleans officials such as the Chief of Police, the Sheriff, the District Attorney and a Criminal Court Judge. Other presenters include heads of the various NOPD departments such as: sex crimes, family violence, murder, identity theft and other topics. The speakers give insightful presentations about how the various departments function. There is also a “Shoot / Don’t Shoot” video presentation in which you are placed in simulated confrontational situations to experience the types of critical decisions police officers are faced with every day. You will learn how the multiplicity of departments and agencies interact, and the methods used in the various departments such as property crimes, crimes against persons, and so on.
The classes are interactive and you are encouraged to ask questions and make comments about thevarious topics. If you have questions about how the departments function or what to expect from community policing then these classes are a must attend.
The classes are Wednesday evenings for 8 weeks from 6 to 9PM at the S.O.D. on Tchoupitoulas (next to Wal-Mart). There is no charge and usually snacks and water or soft drinks are provided.
