Library

The Mid-City branch of the New Orleans Public Library opened June 11, 2007, with an official grand opening celebration on July 26. Neighbors near and far have increasingly used its materials and services.

The start-up funds were from a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Gulf Coast Libraries Project. Individuals from our neighborhood provided over $7000 at a pre-opening gala, which allowed for the purchase of needed furnishings for the library. Corporations have joined individuals in donations, such as Capital One Bank’s gift of $5000 for children’s books.

Our next big event will be the MID-CITY LIBRARY FEST, held on Saturday, April 5, 2008, from 11a.m. to 5 p.m. Everyone — young, old, and in-between – is invited to attend and celebrate our library, while joining your neighbors in games, storytelling, a crawfish boil (and other good food), and a chance to hear some incredible world-renowned Mid-City musicians. Tickets will be sold for food, drink, and some of the activities. Proceeds will be given to the library for the purchase of more books, DVDs, CDs, and other library materials for the Mid-City branch.

MCNO continues to seek additional donations for this branch library, which is officially a “temporary library”, but which we hope to make permanent. All contributions are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. Make checks payable to the Mid-City Neighborhood Organization, and mail them to MCNO, PO Box 791023, New Orleans, LA 70179. Be sure to write “Library Fund” in the memo section. Questions? – email one of the Education/Library Co-Chairs.
