Rumors
October 23rd, 2006 by Bart EversonMid-City Neighborhood Organization had a board meeting Saturday morning to discuss certain rumors that have been circulating. What we know at this point is that an out-of-state developer has been purchasing significant parcels of land in Mid-City. We don’t know what their plans are. MCNO is researching to find out more now, and we’ll share what we learn as we learn it via this website. Stay tuned!

I think the “rumor” is solved: Times-Picayune, Wed. 10/25/06 B-2 Developers plan to put an apartment complex at the former Baumer Food site on So. Hennessy St. City council approved a zoning variance to allow more unit than parking allows. 0 housing units in that square will be repllaced with 183!!!!!!!! units. A typical square has about 30-35 houses on it. Even if they are doubles that is only 60 to 70 units. 183 is three times the normal density. I live at 415 So. Hennessy. Traffic is already horrendeous with the daily Jesuit High School traffic. This rental development is nothing more than a housing project in disguise and I think it will do nothing but lower the property values in my area. With so many slum-lord rentals already in the immediate area, I think it is shame to further the decline in my area. Thanks for listening

Sylvia: Actually the development that you are referring to is another issue. In fact, the developers who wish to put an apartment complex approached MCNO and other community groups in Mid-City to ask for our input and support. Though we have many concerns about the propossed development, we are working with them in hopes of a improving the final “product.”
As for the parcels of land being purchased, as mentioned in this post, that is a separate issue which we are continuing to research.
