Is-a’s Sandwich Shop
June 11th, 2006 by Michael HomanUnfortunately, Gigi’s closed, but in its place there is a great neighborhood sandwich shop. Is-a’s is open daily 11AM until Midnight at Banks and S. Alexander, and they have fantastic po-boys. In fact, their catfish po-boy for $4.99 was the best I’ve ever had. Fries are a dollar more, and sodas are only 50 cents. Even better, get a beer at the Banks Street Bar next door and bring it inside. Also, they have boiled crawfish on Fridays.

Hey, you might consider putting WHY Gigi’s is gone. Ask the owners of Bank Street. I’ll never go to any place they own.

How can you promote this establishment? I could never eat there.
Didn’t the owner of the building throw the girl who owned the restaurant to the curb after she worked so hard getting the place reopened? That is just wrong! The proprietor lived right across the street from the restaurant and her house was totally flooded. She lived in a trailer while she rebuilt the restaurant from scraps. You have to admire that kind of local spirit.
I was so looking forward to her pre-Katrina menu returning. Who else would deliver Lemongrass Pork Chops, or sticky sweet Sesame Chicken? And it was soo good! How can you compare that to a catfish po boy and fries? You can get that almoste anywhere!

Welcome back, GIGI?「どィび「s

Gigi?「どィび「s Asian Bistro has reopened at 4415 Banks St. next door to Banks St. Bar and Grill. Great new addition: BREAKFAST! Check out this great little neighborhood eatery. Gigi?「どィび「s is open for breakfast. lunch, and dinner.
Traitors! As a reminder of what we are giving up, here is a review I found online:

A free-thinking little restaurant in residential Mid-City, GiGi looks like a sandwich shop from the outside, feels like an artist’s cabin inside and smells just like what it is—a neighborhood Asian caf?ノャゥ utilizing payloads of fresh ginger, Thai basil and coconut milk. For appetizers, try pitting the Thai fried spring rolls (cabbage and ginger dominate the filling) against the Vietnamese fried spring rolls (basil gives them an anise kick); or try the fried chicken wings stuffed with a shrimp and pork forcemeat. To describe GiGi as quirky would be putting it lightly. Service is sweet but often flaky, and the wall air conditioning unit doesn’t quite cut it during the summer months. Fortunately, everything is so reasonably priced we did a double-take. Single servings of Thai beef basil, lemon grass pork chops and sesame chicken all go for a mere $5.95; even the larger sized entr?ノャゥes are economical.

Joanne, it was just me who put the post above, so don’t think that the entire MCNO consists of “Traitors.” I too miss GiGi’s and hope she is doing well. I believe she is in Wisconsin. But the people running Is-A’s who I’ve met seem like nice people. The next time I go there I will try to find out more about who actually runs the restaurant.
