News from Jay Batt’s office
March 30th, 2006 by Jim TaylorFeel free to contact Jay’s office by phone or e-mail to comment on these significant issues.
Dear Concerned Neighborhoods,
Jay is proposing an Ordinance whereby property owners are given a deadline within which to gut their houses and either board them up or begin repairing/rebuilding. We receive calls and questions regarding this on a daily basis and we would like to encourage people to take care of their property before it becomes a major safety hazard. In an effort to do this, you will receive information from our office regarding mosquito/rodent control and information regarding gutting homes….
What we need right now is some input. We would like suggestions as to what a fair deadline for gutting should be. Right now we are toying with the notion of making it the one-year anniversary for Katrina – August 29, 2006. We would, however, appreciate your suggestions. Please forward your responses and any other suggestions to me.
Our office is compiling a list of street lights that are out-of-service so that we may get the information to Entergy in the hopes of speeding up the recovery process. We are aware of the problem and are working closely with Entergy to get it resolved. I have been given some locations at various neighborhood meetings and I would like to receive them again. If at all possible, please compile a list of streetlights in your own neighborhood and e-mail the list to me.
New Orleans Mosquito and Termite Control Board is compiling a list of all the pools in Orleans Parish. Many pools have been left unattended after hurricanes Katrina and Rita. We would like to know if you have a pool in your yard and the condition of the pool. If you are maintaining the pool, we need that information. If you are not maintaining your pool or if you know of an unattended pool, please let us know and we will send out an inspector to take a look at the pool. Not every pool with dark water is breeding mosquitoes. Many have fish or predatory insects. If the pool has mosquito larvae, we will treat the pool at no charge. Also, I attached a rodent complaint form. If you are having problems with rodents, please let us know. Our inspectors will treat the storm drains and only outside the structure. All information collected is restricted to use in only within our department.
We will need the following information for both mosquitoes and rodents:
name:
complete address:
nearest cross street:
phone number:
permission to go on your property:
Do we need to you prior to the inspection?: yes or no
Is there a dog in the yard? yes or no
A brief description of the problem.
I also attached the mosquito control complaint form. You can fill out the form if you prefer and send it back to me. If you use the form, please fill out only the left side of the form. Also please save the file using the following format: Month day and last name: example: March 27-2006 Smith
The information and/or form can be sent to nomtcb@yahoo.com or back to me at criegel@cityofno.com.

A brief description of the problem:
We plan to move in the upstairs of the home June 1st. There are vacant houses that are not gutted next to our home; 6733 and 6732 Memphis St. Also there is an abandoned pool adjacent to our back yard; the address for this home is 3727 Vickburg St. The fence is down in the alley and there are nats, mosquitos, and bugs in my backyard and the surrounding areas. Also, the street light on Memphis has not been turned on yet. There are two other residents back in trailers on this block.
Thank you so much for your help! We really hope this ordinance gets teeth because we are die hard Lakeview residents and we want it to come back strong!
