Permit Watch
March 9th, 2006 by Bart EversonThere’s more and more activity in the neighborhood every day. Most of it is positive, hopefully, but you may also see things that concern you.
Now there is a website that allows you to check what permits have been issued for any given address. It’s simple to use. Here’s how:
- Go to VelocityHall.com
- Specify “Louisiana” and “New Orleans” on the homepage, then click the “Go” button.
- You’ll get a menu of options. Choose “Check/Research Permits.”
- You’ll get a submenu of options. Choose “Look up Address and Parcel details by Address.”
- Enter the address of the property in question, then click the “Search” button.
- You should get a listing of at least one address. (If not, check that you entered the information correctly.) Follow the link to the appropriate address.
- You should now see a listing of information about the property and contact information for the owner.
- Click the “See Permits” button for a list of permits that have been issued for that address.
- For any existing permits, you can follow the link for more information.
For example, many people noticed the demolition of Physicians Hospital (formerly Montelepre) on Canal Street, next to Warren Easton High School, as seen in the picture below.
By entering the address (3125 Canal St) on this website, I was able to learn that a commercial demolition permit was issued on January 25th for “Demolition to grade of vacant office to grade by owner - substantially damaged by Hurricane Katrina.” The permit was issued to Samuel Bobo of Thunderbolt Construction. It even lists a phone number. I was also able to learn that the property is now owned by an company called “3125 Canal LLC,” located at 2230 Mac Arthur Dr in Alexandria.
Thanks to Rev. Marshall Truehill for bring this website to our attention.
Note: If you see anything taking place around the neighborhood which you believe to be improper, by all means call the Safety & Permits office of City Hall at (504) 565-6130.

PS: I called the number listed on the permit for Thunderbolt Construction, which is actually registered to Excel Health Services LLC. They’re at 2230 S Macarthur Dr Ste 2B in Alexandria — same address as the property owner mentioned above. They referred me to a Mr. Marion Edwards who is handling the property. Mr. Edwards was very friendly and informed me that they have no long term plans for the property beyond selling it. He even tried to interest me making an offer!
